SxSW here I come

with 2 comments

I know I mentioned video blog posts would be coming soon, but it’s almost 2am, and I look like death from another long day at school. That’s the thing about vlogging – you have to be ON if you’re doing it all the time. I’m just not there yet.

I’ve been staying up late these last few nights trying to soak up enormous amounts of knowledge about the film+music+interactive festival that floods Austin next week, and still, I have no idea what to expect – it’s probably safe to assume that it’s going to be sheer madness of creativity, innovation, and energy covering every inch of the city for 10+ days. It’s my first time – in terms of visiting texas, as well as attending the festival as a volunteer. I’ve signed in blood to sacrifice a minimum of 60 hours to help crew at the Film venues and help with Press & Publicity. God help me.

Here’s the tab so far:
1) Southwest R/T flight for SFO ->PHX, PHX ->AUS $364
2) Accommodations: Free! (staying with Chander and Ed (friends of a friend) for almost 12 days, so definitely bringing culinary gifts from SF, helping w/groceries, dinners, bfasts, bar crawls…etc)
3) Gold badge (gives you access to film & music events): Free! (if I can survive working the festival for 60 hrs and simultaneously keep up with constant classwork)

Here’s the time I’ve spent looking at or doing anything SxSW related :

4 hrs/day – signing up for events

2 hr/day – researching and corresponding with film/music industry about meeting up and interviewing

1 hr/day – repacking my suitcase. Why do I get the sense that there will be occasional rain amidst the March heat??

2 hrs/day – trying to listen to a variety of and decide which artists/bands to catch

1.5 hrs/day – freaking out looking at my Google calendar, thinking “Should I purchase a month’s supply of 5-hour energy just in case??” I’ve never even tried the stuff, but have a feeling it’s going to come in handy.

After pleading with two of my instructors (after all, I AM missing almost two weeks of classes right before spring break and midterms), they’ve assigned a potential topic for me to cover while at the festival: “new sounds.” I have a feeling one of my instructors is in the closet about his interest in electronic music, especially anything involving synthesizers. He suggested I keep my ears open for new instruments/techniques being used in music introduced at the festival. I may take the department’s camera equipment with me so I can provide full coverage and bring back footage, along with interviews. If I could just find a way to waive the airline fee for the equipment…I checked Southwest’s policy today, and it’s $50 per equipment case, if it’s not in your checked luggage or carry on. Where there’s a will, there’s a way…

There are so many things going on next week, and it’s daunting, overwhelming at times.  I know I won’t see everything I want to see, I won’t be able to meet everyone I want to meet, but I’m excited to just be a part of it, regardless.
